Today we’ll consider a series of SQL queries that analyze the disk space used by our databases. This way is based on selecting information from system views and tables.
 
Using only SQL for data analysis gives us the opportunity to get information from a Netezza appliance in any environment – all we need is access to the SQL console
 
A logical first step is to understand the size of our databases with an ‘order of magnitude’ analysis.

Netezza does not support indexes in user tables. Instead, Netezza uses zone maps. Zone maps are automatically generated internal tables that the NPS system uses to improve the throughput and the response time of SQL queries against large grouped or nearly ordered date, timestamp, byteint, smallint, integer, and bigint data types. Information about zone maps is stored in the table _vt_spu_zmap_info.

Netezza has special kind of views that store a subset of base table columns in a sorter manner. Those views are named “MATERIALIZED VIEWS”.

We’ve been working on a query tool for Netezza to address our own selfish needs– primarily to get a deeper knowledge of how to deeply leverage it and bring platform specific features directly to our developers via a simple “Netezza Aware” query tool.  Although we like it for specific reasons, there are a lot of great tools out there that support Netezza.  They are not aware of some of the more unique aspects of Netezza, but they have some great capabilities for doing queries, reviewing data results,etc.  I thought it would be useful to share these.  Please feel free to comment on them and let me know those I may have missed.
