While a company always has the option to build their enterprise data systems from scratch as an active enterprise data factory, most companies have large legacy data warehouses.  In those cases, it is always possible, and often desirable, to migrate to the data factory.  Here are the six major steps involved in a migration approach.

The key to the data factory approach is a clear end-to-end view of the data production system. It is important to chalk out what needs to be achieved in the short-term and the long-term. Before beginning a data factory initiative it is important to ask the question "How will the business be different after we've implemented this solution?"  Other questions that need to be asked are: what represents the real value for the end users and for the business? What are the challenges wit data and analytics quality?

For decades, heavyweights of the information service provider industry such as The Nielsen Company, Information Resources Incorporated (IRI), and Acxiom Corporation have successfully built systems that address the same issues today’s new data-centric businesses are struggling with.

Most companies reach a chaotic stage in the evolution of their business by cobbling together ad-hoc systems to process data into advanced analytic output using scripts and non-specialized tools. These rudimentary production systems often deliver initial customer satisfaction, but the costs of managing data this way grow exponentially, eat up the profits that should come with the economies of scale, and act as an impediment to business growth.  They are far from the data factory model and high-performance data factory architecture.

As businesses become increasingly digital, mountains of data are being generated that form the basis for new types of business models. These data-centric businesses leverage high-quality analytics as a core component of their value proposition.
